Why your Claude Code usage limit runs out (and what helps)

Last updated 27 October 2026. Hitting the usage limit by lunch usually isn't about how much you code. It's about how much the agent reads to get started.

What uses the limit

Usage is measured in tokens: everything the model reads and writes. In a coding session the reading dominates: file contents, search results, test output and the conversation so far, re-sent at every step. Long sessions on big repositories grow fast, and so does the cost of each new message.

What makes it last

Shorter conversations, precise instructions and fewer files read per task. The habits in our guide on reducing token usage apply directly. The biggest single lever is skipping exploration: if the agent already knows which files matter, it doesn't need to read the rest.

In our benchmark (Claude Code with Sonnet, 7 real tasks on a repository Synapse had never seen, 2 runs each), Synapse cut tokens by 58% and cost by 48%, and every edit still compiled. Planning tasks saved the most. Results vary by repository and task.

How Synapse fits in

Synapse connects to Claude Code, Cursor and Claude over MCP and hands the agent the exact files, lines and tests for the task before it starts. Setup takes about two minutes with GitHub, and there is a free plan.

Try it

Synapse is free to start: connect a GitHub repository and add it to Claude Code, Cursor or Claude in about two minutes. Create an account or read the docs.
